Paddle Canada Intro to White Water for Women
June 15, 2018 - June 17, 2018 - 1:00 pm (E5K 4E6 Saint John Canada Saint John Canada)
Note: there are 4 of 6 spots left for this course!
The course begins the evening of the June 15th. This time will be spent getting participants set up and familiarized with their kayaking gear; along with familiarization with the weekend itinerary and what to expect.
June 16th and 17th are full days on the water, beginning with the development of fundamentals on flatwater. This includes basic stroke concepts as well as safety on the water. Then we will move to a river and practice, developing comfort and proficiency in a moving water environment.
The final day will be spent running a long section of the river, where the participant will learn how to read water and safely negotiate rapids while practicing and further developing skills along the way.
While in kayaking there is the individual aspect of paddling our own boat; kayaking is very much a team/group activity where people will be expected to work with one another in an effort to promote and maintain safety and cooperation on the river and to aid in fostering the most positive experience possible.
The whitewater kayak community in NB is small and has very few women paddlers. We want to grow the community and are hoping to do that by bringing together a group of women to paddle, laugh and learn together. As a matter of transparency, we want you to know that the instruction and safety will be provided by men. This is in large part because the community does not have active female paddlers that are taking a leadership role in the sport. We hope that changes and that this course helps to do that.
