February 19, 2016 - February 20, 2016 - 6:45 pm (B3K 3B5 Halifax Canada)

Poets for Progress invite you out for another round of spoken word in support of local charities, non-profits, and community groups!

Doors ‘open’ at 6:45pm, come grab your drinks and a good seat, open mic will start at 7:00pm followed by our slam, and then our feature for the night.

We will be hosting our very first writing circle with guidance from El Jones. We will begin one hour prior to the event at 5:45pm. PM Martha Mutale to confirm your participation.

El Jones will be our Feature for the evening. El is a spoken word activist, teacher and (2013-2015) Poet Laureate El Jones. El was the two-time captain of the back-to-back national championship Halifax slam team in 2007 and 2008 and has performed all over Canada. In 2014 she published her first collection of poetry “Live From the Afrikan Resistance!”.

-Open Mic-

Anyone is welcome to perform at the open mic! You do not have to perform spoken word, we welcome story-tellers, musicians, comedians or even people who would like the read pieces from other poets and writers (as long as you state the author’s name).

You can sign up early on Facebook by posting in the event or messaging Martha Mutale or sign up at the door.

-Poetry Slam-

We will be looking for (non-bias) audience judges to give the poets a score out of 10 and whoever has the highest score at the end will win! Each Slam participant can pick a favourite chairity, non-profit, or community group they would like to raise money for and if they win we will write a cheque (or hand-out cash) to that organization. The Slam winner will also get a prize from Communities In Progress Association – CIPA.

Rules of slam:

– Poems must be 3 minutes or shorter (otherwise you will be subject to time penalties off your final score)
– Must be orginal, no props, only words.
– 5 judges will score your poem from 0-10

3-2-1 SPEAK!

If you’re a poet but don’t have a group you want to compete for, let us know and we can give you a list of some of our partner groups who are doing fantastic things in the community!

Poets for Progress is a community of poets who want to see positive change happen in their neighbourhood created by volunteers of Communities In Progress Association – CIPA.

The goal is simple; connect artists, spectators and small local groups to create a network of people who come together to contribute their voice and donations to support great initiatives in our broader community through a night of performance poetry, story-telling, and music.

As a non-profit that also started out as a small community group of volunteers, we know the challenges of working in an underfunded industry and now that we have grown, we want to use this event to give other small group and organizations the chance to raise a bit of money towards their cause. If you’re looking to raise awareness or funds for your group or organization, but don’t have a poet to perform in the slam – that’s ok! Contact us on facebook or email our Executive Director at paige.farah@nscipa.ca to find out how to get involved.

If you haven’t already, join our facebook group Poets for Progress to find out about upcoming events in our community!
